Beat the Heat
A Spay-It-Forward Initiative
Our Goal.
Beat the Heat is Saskatchewan’s first and only province-wide Spay-It-Forward campaign, and our mission is clear: to humanely reduce the cat overpopulation crisis across our province.
Saskatchewan is facing an unprecedented crisis—stray and unwanted cats are overwhelming shelters and rescue organizations, leading to intake freezes, reduced quality of care, and, tragically, euthanasia. Existing spay and neuter programs are often income-based and regionally restricted, making it difficult for even the most dedicated animal lovers to access the vital veterinary care their pets need, especially in today’s challenging economy.
Beat the Heat offers a powerful solution by providing reduced-cost spay/neuter services to residents regardless of location or financial ability. Our program is designed to prevent kitten season before it begins, keeping pets with their families and dramatically reducing the number of unwanted litters. Every dollar donated directly funds these critical surgeries, ensuring that the funds go where they are needed most.
We invite you to join us in this life-changing mission. Your support not only helps alleviate the strain on our shelters and rescues but also contributes to a healthier, more sustainable future for every cat in Saskatchewan.
What is Beat the Heat?
Beat the Heat is a pilot Spay-It-Forward program dedicated to offering low-cost spay/neuter services to residents of Saskatchewan who own or care for unfixed cats. Our mission is to prevent cats in our province from suffering cruelty, neglect, and homelessness. By reducing overpopulation, we enhance the quality of life for both pets and shelter animals, promote animal advocacy and wellness, and alleviate the constant pressure on rescues and shelters.
While February is celebrated as Beat the Heat Month, our commitment doesn’t stop there—our program runs all year round to provide ongoing support and lasting impact for Saskatchewan’s feline community. Join us in making a real difference every day by helping ensure that every cat has the chance to live a healthier, safer life.
How does it Work?
Starting in February, SOS launches a dedicated fundraising campaign to gather the necessary resources for providing low-cost spay and neuter services. The program invites applications from individuals who are unable to afford or qualify for existing reduced-price services, using a first-come, first-served selection process that prioritizes high-risk community cats. Once applicants are chosen, SOS coordinates with veterinary clinics to schedule the surgeries and communicates these details to the cat owners. The owners then agree to the program’s terms, pre-pay the surgery fee, and sign a consent form. These surgeries not only help reduce the number of homeless cats but also provide important health benefits to the participating felines. Any remaining funds are reinvested to extend the program into subsequent months, ensuring its sustainability and continued impact on the community.
