Steel wasn’t given the best start in life.
He came to SOS Prairie Rescue as a transfer from another rescue after being removed from an overcrowded hoarding situation. Growing up with very little positive human interaction, Steel never had the chance to learn that people could be safe, kind, and loving.
Now he’s learning.
Every single day, Steel chooses courage over fear.
Over the past six months in foster care, he’s made incredible progress. He now greets his foster family at the door after work, announces breakfast with great enthusiasm, and has even decided that sleeping on dirty laundry is preferable to a perfectly nice cat bed—because it smells like his favourite people.
He’s also discovered that toys are the greatest invention ever. Wave a string toy or anything worth chasing, and Steel transforms into a playful, athletic goofball. He especially loves another playful male cat to wrestle and cuddle with after the excitement is over.
Steel does best with male feline friends. He means well with female cats but sometimes gets a little too enthusiastic during playtime and struggles to recognize when they’re finished. He also coexists well with respectful dogs who understand that personal space is important.
When it comes to people, Steel likes to make you work just a little for his affection. One of his favourite games is asking for pets… then walking away just enough that you have to follow him. Once you’ve “won,” he’ll happily accept scratches—and if you’re really lucky, he’ll even offer up his adorable belly for gentle rubs.
Steel is currently taking anti-anxiety medication while he continues building confidence. He’ll also need medication before veterinary visits and during major life changes, like settling into a new home. The good news? The medication is inexpensive, easy to give (especially with a squeeze-up treat), and has helped him make remarkable progress.
Will Steel be the cat you scoop up for cuddles on day one? Probably not.
Will he need patience while he learns to trust you? Absolutely.
But if you’re willing to let Steel move at his own pace, you’ll get to experience something truly special: watching a cat who never knew what love was slowly decide that you’re his safe place.
Some cats steal your heart the moment you meet them.
Steel earns it—and somehow, that makes it even more rewarding.
